LANSING, MI (Lansing Area Aphasia Support Group, East Lansing, MI, ZOOM, 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM, Wednesday, October 23, 2019).
I presented “Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) Science & Neuroplasticity” with over 15 members and staff (including my hosts, Rose Roberts and Katie Strong) with the Lansing Area Aphasia Support Group.
The principal theme of the presentation was plasticity and the common denominator between speech therapy and MBE Science including the connection between William James (the person who coined the term plasticity) and John Dewey (a prominent scholar in education reform) who became friends with James and learned about experience-dependent neural plasticity from James in 1891 when James wrote the book, The Principles of Psychology.
We talked about the relationship between photosynthesis (converting light into green leaves) and plasticity (converting thought into neural (brain) matter. One slide provided a time lapse footage of neurons making connection with other neurons which is quite amazing!
Thank you Lansing Area Aphasia Support Group! It was a great Aphasia Awareness Day!
